December 5 – Let Go. What (or whom) did you let go of this year? Why? (Author: Alice Bradley)

I have let go of my sign business.  I have been self employed for the past five years with a sign and printing  business.  I have decided to let this business go for numerous reasons.

One, which no one wants to talk about, is that the economy had a real impact on my decision to shut down this business.  I am in a rural area so the business wasn’t exactly booming or making me rich, but it was making me a modest living.  With the economic slowdown,  businesses were shutting down, which meant they no longer had to advertise.  They were no longer purchasing signs, t-shirts, business cards, etc.  With my business income down,  I could no longer afford the space that was required to house the large printing equipment.

The second reason is that I had a real epiphany one morning while having coffee with my wife.  We were talking about plans of what I should do for income, since the sign business was down.  I am also trained to opperate heavy equipment, which is what I have done all my life exept for the time I had the sign business.  I really didn’t want to go back into this field because of the harsh conditions you work in and the toll it takes on your body, though I was willing to do so.

My wife asked me, “What is it you really want to do?  What would you be doing if money were not an issue?”  At that point it hit me like a ton of bricks.  I had chills run over my body as I teared up – yes, a 6’4″, 240 lbs man teared up – and I said, “My artwork…This is what I truly want to do. ”  Now, here I am.  I am creating my art and enjoying every minute I am working.  I am not yet making enough money to live comfortable but I am happy.
